✨ Our Money Stories and Designing a Life That Works
Many of us are feeling the huge changes and challenges of this unsettling period — both in our own lives and in our collective history.
Alongside the uncertainty, there is also, for many people, a quiet sense that it may be time for a new beginning.
People are re-evaluating choices.
Questioning old ways of living and working.
Feeling drawn towards what truly matters.
For some, this may involve small, subtle changes.
For others, it may feel like time for a deeper reset.
These inner nudges are often guiding us toward lives that feel more aligned with our strengths, values, and what genuinely feels right for us.
We are being invited to listen more deeply to ourselves.
🌿 The Tension Between Meaning and Security
Of course, this can create tension.
Many people struggle to trust that heartfelt choices will sustain them materially.
There can be fears around:
paying the bills
financial security
whether there will be enough
So whilst many of us are feeling called toward more authentic ways of living and working, we also need to remain practical.
For many people, the answer may not be an extreme leap, but rather finding a middle road — one that allows us to move closer to what we love whilst still making a living.
In an earlier blog, I spoke about the role a side project or “side hustle” can play in helping us feel creative, purposeful, and fulfilled.
💰 Our Money Stories
Money is, in many ways, simply an energy.
Yet many of us carry early stories around money that may still shape us today.
Perhaps we grew up hearing:
“It’s not good to be wealthy”
“People with money are selfish”
“Creative work isn’t sustainable”
These stories can stay with us throughout our lives and quietly hold us back from fully receiving.
At the same time, more and more people are wanting:
flexibility
autonomy
meaningful work
freedom over their time
These too are forms of value.
Even if someone’s monthly income is not enormous, they may feel deeply rewarded by the flexibility, creativity, and sense of purpose their work brings.
These are some of the themes I increasingly encounter in my work with clients wanting to do work that matters — but who are fearful about fully following that path.
🌍 Fear of Lack
Often, what holds us back from stepping more fully into our authentic selves is fear of not having enough.
In my Creative Entrepreneurs group recently, we spoke about this tension between earning enough money whilst also valuing the freedom that comes with making our own choices and designing our lives more intentionally.
For some, these fears run deep.
Childhood experiences around money, scarcity, or feeling “less than” can continue to shape us long into adulthood.
Perhaps there wasn’t enough money at home.
Perhaps there was embarrassment around clothes, food, or comparison with peers.
These early experiences can make it difficult to trust that we will be okay — even when our adult reality is very different.
🌱 Recognising the Supports We Do Have
If you are reading this, it is unlikely you are without resources — even if financial concerns exist.
It can help to remember that you are far more resourced now than you were as a child.
You likely have:
more autonomy
more skills
more support
more life experience
more people who can help you
And our resources are about much more than our bank balance.
They also include:
our health
our creativity
our relationships
our communities
our resilience
our ability to adapt and grow
✨ Other Ways We Receive Value
Traditionally, value has often been measured financially.
And yes — it is important to own our worth in this way.
But there are also many other ways we can experience reward, fulfilment, and appreciation.
Some questions worth reflecting on:
Are we expressing an important part of ourselves?
Are we contributing something meaningful?
Are we using our creativity, leadership, organisational or technological strengths?
Are we making time for friendships, rest, movement, or experiences that nourish us?
These things can be deeply valuable too.
I believe this is part of a growing shift — especially amongst younger generations — towards wanting lives that feel healthier, more balanced, and more meaningful alongside work.
🌟 Trust
How can we trust that we will be okay if we make choices that allow for more flexibility, meaning, and non-material forms of reward?
This asks us to trust more deeply.
To trust that when we make choices aligned with:
who we are
our strengths
our values
what genuinely lights us up
something begins to shift.
This belief may be spiritual in nature — but it has certainly been true in my own life.
When we are internally aligned with what feels important, that energy comes through in our work, relationships, leadership, and creativity.
We all know people whose passion and authenticity contribute hugely to their success.
